The two-state solution was conceived by New York Times columnist Tom Friedman in 2002 together with then Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud at their bizarre dinner in the Royal Palace when Tom dared to broach the two-state solution - to find out to his shock and amazement that Abdullah had a speech in his desk proposing such a solution. Abdullah subsequently became King and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia from 1 August 2005 until his death in 2015.
